Working Families has got funding for a booklet for parents of disabled children about finding work or stepping up your work. We need to hear from you about your experiences; what helps and what doesn’t help. We also need a small panel of people to comment on our work in progress. We want the booklet to be based on real experience and address the barriers to work for parents disabled children as they really are. As the parent of a disabled child, you will know that support is essential. The existence of people who share your experience and can offer practical help is invaluable. That is why Working Families has created ‘Waving not drowning' for parents of disabled children.

This is a project for parents who work, or want to work, and who have children with disabilities. It provides a network, a newsletter and a dedicated helpline on 020 7253 7243. The helpline is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9.30am - 1.00pm and 2.00pm - 4.30pm.
For free advice on Tax Credits, flexible working and rights at work parents can also call our free helpline on 0800 013 0313 which is open Monday to Friday.

Lobbying

As a lobbying body Working Families have made disability campaigning one of our priorities in recent years. You can read our most recent policy paper, Making WORK work, here. Our efforts paid off recently, with the government extending childcare eligible for Childcare Tax Credits to a new category of 'Home Carers'. We will continue to pursue more accessible, affordable care for all children, and particularly for those with disabilities.
